Shattering 「Backstage love drama」. Intragroup love affairs disclosed!!
Hearts soften at the sight of mark of affection displayed between young girls. However, when those marks of affection happen between top idols in active duty and when they push their camaraderie “beyond reasonable limits”, isn’t the heart of fans thrown out of order?
In this regard, in SKE48 the member who is by far the source of most thrills is none other that Team S, Matsui Jurina. Her who has been given the infamous title for an idol of “Kissing monster”, has extent her grasp on the whole group.

The first time she really took me aback. She was sitting next to me in the bus, we were chatting normally and out of the blue “chu”…
Team S - Kizaki Yuria
When she is in a good day, Jurina-san is all over the place. It’s like she had been raised abroad (tln : alt -> like if she was a foreigner). Even though she is a purebred child of Nagoya! Besides she launches surprise attacks so there is no way to counter her….
It’s not clear how far the voice of the victims can be heard. However, during an handshake event which took place in January this year, among the 16 members who were standing on stage, it was revealed that only 4 didn’t received Jurina’s “baptism”.
Those were Team KII Matsumoto Rina, Hata Sawako, Mukaida Manatsu and Team E Kaneko Shiori.
Team S Yagami Kumi, who has been side by side with Jurina since the establishment of SKE48, gives us some light in the issue.
Yagami
If the other party is firm, if it looks like she will reject her, even Jurina won’t tempt anything. Because she knows she might upset the person. Jurina too has a certain faculty to sense danger.
I see, so the explanation lies in the consent of the other party…. However, even though Yagami gave us this “favorable” interpretation, a few minutes later she was turning Jurina down, kindly but firmly.
Kaneko
After the event that day backstage, Jurina-san suddenly drew close to me…. I tried rejecting her 「No no no no」 but…. Like the most natural thing on Earth, she landed a kiss on my cheek.
This is certainly an uncompromising kissing monster, unforgiving of any “leftover”. But even such a girl seems to have a special someone.
Mukaida
Churi-san (Team KII Takayanagi Akane) and Jurina seem to be the “real deal”. Even when Jurina-san is busy kissing other members here and there, she keeps asking around 「Haven’t seen Churi?」. When they’re together, sometimes Churi seats in Jurina’s lap…. I should stop here, if was to say more than this…
To sort this affair out, it appears further investigations will be necessary.
Beside, while I was gathering information I heard of another intriguing rumor.
The relationship between Team S Matsui Rena and Team KII Furukawa Airi.
Originally, Furukawa entered SKE48 as an admirer of MatsuiR, the relation between them started with this “longing gaze”. But today, it has progressed to reach a whole different level.
That’s at least what Team S Nakanishi Yuka has been secretly thinking.

The other day I plied Furukawa with questions. Notably 「If Rena was to propose you “Let’s go out”, what would you do? 」. Then Furukawa clearly said 「Of course I would go out with her」. But that girl becomes shy in front of Rena and she loses all her means (bitter smile).
From what I’ve seen, if Furukawa was to “man up” a bit more and press Rena, those two would immediately go out together I think.
That close to cling but not yet clinging… Wait, are we in 「Kimi ni Todoke」 or what?!
As a journalist I wanted to go deeper in the subject but I had to bear with my curiosity and close my notebook here. Ah, adolescence is such a sublime thing. But, no matter how much you exult/celebrate youth between comrade, you’d better not forget the rule prohibiting love.
I liked this article, and I don’t have complains about the last remark.
Actually, on the contrary, I’m pretty happy about it. LOL
No, not because I like the “love relationships are prohibited rule”(I don’t), but because - and maybe some of you happened to read something like this - some people tend to “excuse” hypothetical relationships between members because “Well, since love is prohibited of course it would end up like this, so it’s okay” like relationships between girls weren’t real relationships (so they shouldn’t be counted in the rule) but a mere surrogate of boy\girl relationships unavoidable because of the circumstances.
Of course I know not everyone thinks that way, but that’s why I liked that remark. :)

Q - This was your first fashion shooting with Smart, how did it go?
Rena - I was really nervous (laugh). I’m not good at posing in the first place, but when I stand in a white studio like this one I’m totally at a loss (laugh). I’m extremely happy to be able to figure in so much of Smart pages, but if those end up being all weird pictures, I deeply apologize!
Q - There is no such thing! Those are all splendid shots! Is there any outfit you liked in particular?
Rena - All those clothes were lovely, but the matching of parka in page 3 is something I wouldn’t usually wear, it was refreshing for me to try it. Since it gives another image of me, I’m looking forward to hear fans reactions about it.
Q - That’s also the first time you’re submitted to a long interview in our magazine, so I’ll start by asking you about your various fields of activity. This spring, you’ll cross the 3 years and an half mark of entering SKE48, in the first place, why did you join SKE48?
Rena - Since I was little my dream was to become an actress, but when I saw AKB48 performance on TV I instantly loved it. I really admired them as artists so when I saw Maeda Atsuko-san or Oshima Yuko-san playing in drama and movies, I realized entering this group could bring me closer to the objective for my future, so I decided I wanted to audition. And right then, I heard a sister group, SKE48, was to be formed in my home area, so I apply for the audition right away.
Q - When you passed the audition, were you confident you’d succeed?
Rena - No, not at all (laugh). I had zero experience in singing and dancing, and during the audition too I didn’t do well at all. I was convinced dancing normally wouldn’t be good however, so during the audition I always bear in mind to maintain my best smile while dancing. And then, I was somehow selected, which made me really happy.
Q - In parallel to your position inside SKE48, you’ve ranked 11th in 2010 General Elections, 10th the following year and so you’ve become a regular in AKB48 singles’ selection. So far many things happened, among them, is there one that holds a special significance for you? If so, please let us know what it is.
Rena - First of all, to have been appointed as a member of Team S. Among the 20 girls who passed the selection, only 16 could enter Team S. It was of great importance for me to be among those 16. I realized then that the first time I had gain a bit of self-confidence.
The second one was to be given the opportunity to play Gekikara in 「Majisuka Gakuen」. I believe it’s thanks to this role that AKB48 fans have come to know me.
Q - Sure enough, thanks to this drama the number of AKB48 fans went up at once and your name became famous too.
Rena - With Kojima Haruna-san, Itano Tomomi-san, Kashiwagi Yuki-san I was part of the “Four Heavenly Kings” (tln : 四天王 in the text), the first time I read the script and learn about my role I wondered 「Why do I have such an important role?!」, I didn’t expected it at all (laugh). I heard it from a 3rd party afterwards but, in SKE48 2nd stage there is my unit song 「Ame no pianist」, and in this song there is a part where I violently mimic playing the piano, it’s said that seeing this Akimoto sensei felt “something” in my dance and that “something” is linked to my role as Gekikara (laugh).
Q - Indeed, that’s a dance that would let transpire Gekikara ferocious nature’s aspect (laugh). In addition, you took up the challenge to play as a solo actress (tln : meaning outside 48 production), did it prove difficult to conciliate your usual work with this filming?
Rena - Last year I was given the chance to play in BeeTV drama. At first I had to remember many many things, I had a lot in my mind, I couldn’t correctly coordinate the shooting times with my activities in SKE48, so I started to feel down. But thanks to the support of those around me even though everyone was very busy, I was able to pass through this dark period. Thanks to this I think my internal capacity to deal with hard times has extend dramatically. After that, my stance with regard to work has changed or rather I came to enjoy working more than I did before (laugh).
Q - Is there something you’d like to do in particular as an actress?
Rena - I love acting and express myself in front of an audience so, if I’m offered a role, right now I’m ready to try anything. I can capitalize what I learn while working as an actress during SKE48 performances, also I think when I act my dancing and singing experience as member of SKE48 can be felt, so to rise my overall level from now on I want to take up the challenge of “expressing myself” more and more.
Q - You released your first photobook 「Kingyo」 in March…
Rena - The theme is 「If Matsui Rena wasn’t an idol, but an ordinary girl」, the photobook doesn’t hold sophisticated idol pictures, but it’s full of photo of my casual self with close-up on my facial
expressions. Things like part-time working, cooking for myself, having lunch in a cafe, playing on the riverbank (laugh). It isn’t written anywhere, but there is clearly a story in this book, so I’d be really glad if people were to look at it while trying to imagine this story.
Q - Did you manage to use your experience as an actress during the shooting to make it more “expressive”?
Rena - I think so. We started the shooting of Kingyo right after I ended filming BeeTV’s drama. For the conclusion of the drama, there were many scenes where I had to pretend crying and a bit of this lingering memory was still inside me when I went to pose for the photobook. And so, the 1st day we were shooting in a relatively adult atmosphere and while I was being taken in picture tears start to flow naturally. I was surprised myself but I was praised by the cameraman. Those pictures can be found in the photobook, even though this is slightly embarrassing, please have a look!
Q - The latest release to date of your primary place of activity, SKE48’s 「Kataomoi Finally」, was a huge hit. Do you actually feel the spread of SKE48 popularity.
Rena - As a consequence of those good results there are more fans coming to our handshake events, thanks to this I realize there are lots of people who are interested in SKE48. However compared to AKB48 our popularity is still limited, I wish for even more people to know about us! Last month Kuumin (Yagami Kumi), Yuria (Kizaki Yuria) made their entry in this magazine, our group if full of interesting members like those two, but even though they are all extrovertit between them, they don’t show it to the outside* and so they can’t show all their charm (laugh). (tln : Rena uses the expression “内弁慶”-> usually points at someone who is loud, confident even bossy at home or his/her circle of comfort but who loses his/her means once out).
That’s why I want everybody’s charm to be drawn out more!
Q - Next, I’ll inquire on your private life. What fashion do you adopt on your private time?
Rena - Lately I’ve been combining chiffon skirt and knitwear (laugh). But it’s not like I was always wearing the same items, I’ve several of them of various lengths and tints, I like to try different combinations with my clothes.
Q - What is the main point of your clothing style?
Rena - There is none in particular, but there is a particularly elegant female manager in SKE48 and she has become my model. Her tastes in clothes are unusual but she is very skilled at using colors, green suits her especially well. And thus last year all my summer clothes ended up being green (laugh). The other day she was telling me 「I will probably wear red this spring」, so I think this spring I will wear mostly red too (laugh).
Q - She is like your “fashion leader”, isn’t she (laugh)? Are also influenced by the other members?
Rena - Lately I’ve been wearing dresses more often thanks to Kojima Haruna-san. Seeing how cute she always is in dress I thought 「I want to wear dresses to look as cute as Kojima-san!」. If Kojima-san was to hear about it, it’s would be slightly embarrassing (laugh).
Q - Kojiharu-san would be delighted to hear that I’m sure! Now, please tell us about SKE48 objective from now on, as well as yours.
Rena - To make more people aware of our glamor, I want for all the member to raise the level of their performances. In order to bring happiness to the fans coming to our lives or theater stages and to all those who see us on TV, by polishing our skills more and more we will establish SKE48 own mark. On an individual level, I wish to be given more opportunities of acting, also I want to enhance my own performances. There are many members in SKE48 who are great singers and dancers, I want to rapidly reach their level and I’m sure those great efforts will be a plus in my other activities. Anyway, no matter the case, I’ll go at it with all my strength and might.
Q - To conclude, please a word to Smart readers.
Rena - For this shooting I was given the chance to wear really cute outfits, but as I wish everyone could see me wearing SKE48 uniform, by all means please come have fun to our stages or lives! Matsui Rena, SKE48 and Smart (laugh) will continue being in your care from now onwards.

From Nagoya and on their way to conquer Japan, SKE48 is aiming for the top
The two pillars supporting SKE48, Matsui Jurina and Matsui Rena.
With claiming Oricon charts 1st and launching its first national tour among other things, 2011 has been a year full of 1st times for SKE48. We will discuss how the members perceive their popularity after this successful year.
Q- How does it feel to rank top on Oricon’s charts?
Rena - I realized that it was thanks to our fans if we could make it that far, their unwavering support put end by end leading us to place 1st on charts. To answer this feeling, I feel it’s our duty to sing and dance with all our heart when we face our audience and aim to a performance that will make everyone happy.
Jurina - I was delighted, but I thought to myself I shouldn’t be satisfied yet. Bearing in our chests the will to aim higher, we keep giving our best, quarreling when necessary, like we always did.
Rena - Also we were given the chance to perform around Japan, seeing those fans from all over the country with my own eyes, I gained a lot of self-confidence.
Jurina - Indeed. I wasn’t completely sure if we would manage to keep up with AKB48, even now…. but compared with before those doubts are wearing off.
The two are also AKB48 senbatsu members, but their hearts lie in SKE48. Nevertheless, they’re often mistaken with being AKB48 members. But exactly because of who they are, they have a clear vision of the present condition of SKE48 and are aware of the importance of Nagoya for the group.
Q- What is Nagoya for you?
Rena - Our starting point of sort.
Jurina - Our base. Gradually, I want to contribute to make that place where we were born more attractive. I think it’s wonderful that, since SKE48 originated here, we’re able to make people gain interest in Nagoya.
Rena - We want to have the same aura than the Chuunichi Dragons (laugh). Like Doala who was at first only know through Aichi-ken and is now famous countrywide, I wish that someday everyone know about SKE48.
Q - On a scale from 1 to 10, if we pretend that Doala popularity is at 10, where do you put SKE48?
Jurina - Around 5?
Rena - 3.5 for me. SKE is pretty well known among students form middle school to college so I’d say 3. And during the latest handshake events there were also elementary students and little kids, plus a few more adults so add 0.5. If we were to become Aichi-ken tourism ambassadors, we would probably reach 5.
Jurina - I see, I see~ But in Nagoya area we are at 8 or 9 (laugh)
Q - So how do you plan on making it to 10?
Rena - Following the path AKB48 has walked before us won’t be enough, rather SKE48 should try new things, turning it into a strong point and progress from there.
Jurina - As our 1st ever activity in Nagoya, I want to perform more in our theater. Even if all our other fields of work were to disappear, SKE48 will always find its strength in this theater. It’s the same for the other groups but… if we were to perform exclusively in the theater, I’m sure we could make it a more regular show and appear more often.
Rena - AKB48 and NMB48 hold a show everyday, like them I wish SKE48 could perform everyday.
Jurina - Hum. Also lately, during handshake events, I’m receiving a lot of confessions from girls 「Go out with me」「Would you marry me?」(laugh). I want SKE48 to be come a group appealing more to girls.——
Beware, rant ahead : to make things clear, I’m glad Jurina is taking those confessions so well and is able to laugh about it. Even more so if that pushes the group to try to get girls to like them more. But, I still think it’s NOT ok to ask things like ” marry me ” to a 14 years old. Do people really consider how she feels, how that kid feels, when they do that?
I don’t think so. You’re no freaking hero when you ask a middle school student to marry or go out with you (except if you’re around the same age, but I doubt that was the case). Not like I have any hope those fans will turn less creepy and less selfish any time soon, but was feeling like voicing my thoughts on the subject.

O. Shiori (x Mizuki): Sometimes she makes me angry, but she’s good at giving advices so in reality I rely on her a lot. This is not joke material, I’m serious!! (laugh).
Mizuki (x Manatsu): I have an unrequited love for Manatsu. I love making her smile and I feel relaxed when I’m with her.
Manatsu (x Rina): She’s got white skin and her being so funny seems like a gift from the skies. Aside from that, I thought she was cute from the very beginning.
Akane (x Manatsu): I feel a little lonely because lately Manatsu hardly keeps me company nor she lets herself get spoiled by her senpai. (laugh). Manachuri!!
K. Shiori (x Yuria): Between SKE48 she’s the n°1 member I’d like to have as a girlfriend! I can be really selfish but I feel like Yuria-san would be kind to me.
Kanako (x Yuria): She often comes to me to get spoiled. Like sleeping on my knees, and this skinship makes me feel happy. I feel like wanting to cheer her on if she’s troubled.
Rina (x Airi): I have fun talking with her because we really get along well (apart from 2D things). She’s also very kind, I love her. She’s the type of girl I’d like as a girlfriend.
Jurina (x Akane): First of all, Akane’s face is exactly my type! Also, her reactions are cute! It’s fun being with her. I think there’s a good balance between us.
Kumi (x Yuria): Her - don’t get the first part - and her small animal-like are so soft it makes me feel better. Ahhhh, so cute.
Yuria (x Kanako): Kanako-san is really tooooo cute! Everytime I see her face my heart skips a beat and I feel like wanting to get spoiled by her.
Airi (x Rena): When I’m with Rena-san I can’t keep looking into her eyes because my heart beats too fast. She’s supreme whether she’s smiling or has a cool expression. I love everything about her.
Rena (x Airi): It’s still not sure if it’s like this - if unrequited or mutual - but I have an unrequited love (!?). Anyway, I love everything about Airin. When I meet her my heart beats fast and I don’t know what to do.
Kanon (x Kumi): When we went to a Cafè together she treated me saying that was because she’s a senpai. She was super-mega cool!! I can’t forget how she looked that time.
*lol I don’t care enough about the others to blind myself and it’s almost 4AM, but anyway it’s nothing interesting. Masana has an unrequited love on Yuria’s cheeks (D:), Akari loves Rena’s eyes (who doesn’t!?), Shawako admires Akari.
